Holiday parade set

for Grant Avenue

The city’s annual Independence Day parade will be held from 10 a.m. to about noon Tuesday on Grant Avenue.


The parade route will start at Reichert Avenue and end at Seventh Street. The theme this year is “Nation of innovation: Celebrating science and technology in Novato.”


Observers can bring chairs to watch from the sidewalks. Organizers said service animals can attend but other animals are prohibited.


Approximately 70 entrants have registered to participate in the procession.

Alleged thief accused

of attack at market

A shoplifting suspect was arrested in Point Reyes Station after attacking a store employee with a stolen bottle of lime juice, according to the sheriff’s department.


The incident happened Saturday at the Palace Market. When the employee confronted the alleged thief about the stolen merchandise, the suspect struck him in the head with the bottle, slashing his ear and neck.After medics examined the victim, a friend took him to Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in Terra Linda, where he received stitches, according to sheriff’s Sgt. Adam Schermerhorn.


About an hour later, deputies found the suspect sleeping in a car that did not belong to him. Witnesses identified him as the attacker.


Rurales Zenon-Salinas, 25, of Point Reyes was booked into the county jail on suspicion of robbery, mayhem and assault with a deadly weapon. He remained in custody on Thursday in lieu of $50,000 bail.

Police arrest suspect

in child porn probe

San Rafael police arrested a suspect Thursday in a child pornography investigation.


The case started with a tip from the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, said police Sgt. Chris Duncan. The information alleged that a lewd video involving a child was uploaded to a Snapchat account.


Investigators traced the transmission to a residence on Woodland Avenue, identified the Snapchat account holder and obtained a search warrant for the home.


Police booked Sean Michael Nafius, 20, into the Marin County Jail on suspicion of possessing and distributing child pornography. His bail amount is set at $50,000.

Council makes picks

for advisory boards

The Town Council has made three appointments to advisory boards.


The council appointed Mary McDevitt to the Disaster Advisory Council from a field of three applicants, said Town Clerk Lea Dilena. The seat was vacated by Stefanie Hill in March.


The council reappointed Ken Weil to the Library Agency Board of Trustees. He was one of two applicants for the term.


The council also reappointed Jane Gould to the Marin County Commission on Aging.


The council made the appointments at its meeting on June 21.


LARKSPUR


Board approves plan

for home expansion

The Planning Commission has approved a home expansion project at 55 Holly Ave., said Elise Semonian, the city’s community development director.


The proposal involves a 47-square-foot second-story addition to the two-story residence. The commission held a hearing on the project on Tuesday.
