Chris Rock Says He Turned Down An Offer To Host 2023 Oscars After Will Smith Slap

Chris Rock, 57, admitted to declining a request for him to return as host for the 2023 Academy Awards, according to the Arizona Republic. The comedian apparently compared returning to the stage at the Oscars, where he was slapped by Will Smith last year, as returning to the scene of a crime, during his comedy show at the Arizona Financial Theatre in Phoenix, AZ. He also referenced the 1995 murder trial of O.J. Simpson when he reportedly noted it would be like asking the late Nicole Brown Simpson to return “to go back to the restaurant” where she left a pair of eyeglasses the night of her death.

Chris also reportedly talked about the actual slap earlier in his set that night when he said it hurt and referenced how the actor played the legendary boxer Muhammad Ali in a movie. “He’s bigger than me,” Chris said, the outlet further reported. “The state of Nevada would not sanction a fight between me and Will Smith.”

Chris’ latest remarks at his recent comedy show aren’t the first ones he’s made about the now infamous slap. He’s been known to speak about the memorable moment at several of his comedy shows since the incident happened in March. At a show in New Jersey in July, he reportedly said he wasn’t “a victim” and added, “Yeah, that s**t hurt, motherf**ker. I shook that s**t off and went to work the next day… I don’t go to the hospital for a papercut.”

In July, Will broke his silence by taking to his YouTube page to share a video in which he publicly apologized for the slap. “I’ve reached out to Chris and the message that came back is that he’s not ready to talk and when he is, he will reach out. So I will I will say to you, Chris, I apologize to you. My behavior was unacceptable,” he said while sitting and looking directly at the camera, in the video.

“I want to apologize to Chris’s mother,” he continued. “I saw an interview that Chris’s mother did. And that was one of the things about that moment I just didn’t realize. I wasn’t thinking but how many people got hurt in that moment. So I want to apologize to Chris’s mother. I want to apologize to Chris’s family. Specifically Tony Rock. We had a great relationship. Tony Rock was my man. And this probably irreparable.”

MTV Apparently Censored Maneskin’s Televised 2022 VMA Performance

Maneskin were among the many performers tonight (Aug. 28) at the 2022 MTV Video Music Awards. They played a rendition of their song “Supermodel” during the ceremony, which marked their first-ever VMA performance. Apparently, MTV censored the broadcast.

Maneskin’s appearance tonight may or may not have brought viewers back to 1991 when Prince performed “Gett Off” at the MTV Awards… in chaps. Frontman Damiano David wore a similar piece during their performance of “Supermodel,” except his were black leather, more closely resembling what Axl Rose frequently wore onstage with Guns N’ Roses in the mid-’80s.

Though MTV and VMAs have shared snippets of Maneskin’s cheeky performance on their social media accounts, the majority of the broadcast showed an aerial view of the stage rather than a close-up of the band. Many viewers on Twitter have speculated that this was due to David’s outfit, as well as his bandmate Victoria De Angelis’.

The Italian pop-rock group was nominated for two awards at the event this year, Best New Artist and Best Alternative Video for the song “I WANNA BE YOUR SLAVE.” They took home the award for Best Alternative Video, but they lost Best New Artist to Dove Cameron.

Red Hot Chili Peppers played two songs earlier in the night, and were the recipients of this year’s Global Icon Award, which drummer Chad Smith dedicated to late Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins. Panic! At the Disco are the third and final group set to perform and represent the rock genre during the ceremony.

Britney’s naked photo comes just four hours after she shared a video of herself in the tub while she gave a shoutout to her collaborator, Elton. The “Tiny Dancer” singer also reshared the video to his Instagram and wrote, “Hey Britney!! Thank you for this message. You’ve made my day!! Hope everyone has the best day dancing to our song!”

And despite Britney’s joy, she also wrote a message that same day on Twitter to reveal that she is refocusing herself and choosing “happiness.” The Grammy-winner wrote, “I’m learning everyday is a clean slate to try and be a better person and do what makes me happy … yes I choose happiness today. I tell myself every day to let go of the hurt bitterness and try to forgive myself and others to what may have been hurtful.” Her Twitter message arrived the same day that the mom-of-two deleted her Instagram, which she is known to do periodically.

She also went on to add, “I want to be fearless like when I was younger and not be so scared and fearful. I pray there actually is truth to the Holy Spirit and I hope that spirit is with my children as well !!! Yes … I choose happiness and joy today !!!” And we couldn’t be happier for Britney!

While Britney and Elton’s song was released on August 26, the singer wrote about the track on Twitter two days prior. “Okie dokie … my first song in 6 years !!!! It’s pretty damn cool that I’m singing with one of the most classic men of our time … @eltonofficial!!!! I’m kinda overwhelmed… it’s a big deal to me !!! Fabolous is getting back to making music full time. Weeks after being challenged by Funkmaster Flex to drop new material, the Brooklyn rapper has shared “Rich Hustle” alongside Harlem’s own Jim Jones.

Over a Hitmaka production, the two trade bars while out in the streets of Harlem as Fab gets his Rolls-Royce truck washed and the Dipset capo parks at the famed Dyckman basketball courts.

Fabolous’ hasn’t released a full-length album since 2019’s Summertime Shootout 3: Coldest Summer Ever featuring several heavy hitters in Hip Hop such as Meek Mill, Lil Durk, Gucci Mane, Roddy Ricch and more, but the Brooklyn native has been bidding his time, waiting for an opportune moment to get back to his bread and butter.

The relationship between Jones and Fab dates back awhile, to the point where during Jones’ recent fitness run, Fab put his 7-year-old son Jonas through similar workouts.

In June, Jonas was spotted doing push-ups alongside his dad before moving over to hammer curls under Jones’ supervision. He then dropped back down for more push-ups before shifting to core work with a series of flutter kicks. The workout clip ended with Jonas on the chest press machine getting a few reps in.

Security ultimately jumps in and pulls the two women apart before Asian Doll is rushed to an awaiting vehicle. The woman later explained her side of the story in a Facebook post, claiming she was simply trying to take a photo with Asian Doll.

KEHLANI CUTS PHILLY SHOW SHORT AFTER MULTIPLE FANS PASS OUT

Kehlani decided to cut a recent show in Philadelphia short after multiple fans in the audience passed out during the performance.

It’s unclear what exactly caused the fans to pass out but Kehlani decided they didn’t feel safe and that the show at Philly’s outdoor Skyline Stage at The Mann Center on Monday night (August 15) needed to prematurely end.

“I can’t have this,” she told the crowd. “This is not okay. I don’t feel comfortable, I don’t feel okay and I don’t feel like anybody’s safe right now. I love you, too.”

Kehlani hasn’t stated if they will be returning to Philly for another show or if guests will be refunded at some point.

It’s been a chaotic week on the Blue Water Road Trip Tour. Following Monday’s show stoppage, Tuesday night (August 16) only brought more drama as a fight broke out in the midst of Lani’s performance.

It wasn’t all fighting at the Pittsburgh date as there was some romance involved as well. Kehlani reposted an Instagram from the show where a proposal took place between two women on stage. According to Noodz, Kehlani’s proposal counter on tour is up to six.

RICK ROSS RESPONDS TO WINGSTOP VIOLATIONS ADMITS ‘THERE WILL BE MISTAKES’ IN BUSINESS

Rick Ross has responded to the $100,000 bill he received from The Department of Labor’s Wage and Hour Division for several violations at five of his Wingstop restaurants.

The Biggest Bawse took to his Instagram Stories on Wednesday (August 17) to admit he made a mistake with some of his businesses. The Miami native took full responsibility in true Rozay fashion as he sat behind a grand piano and delivered a motivational message to all the aspiring bosses.

“I want to take time to address something,” Rozay said. “When you running a business, there will be mistakes, but as the Biggest Bawse, you don’t make the same mistakes twice, you see?”

He added: “Taking accountability is big when you the biggest, and remember this, most successful people don’t take stumbling as a setback but actually a stepping stone to greater things, you heard me? Let’s be great.”

As reported by Mississippi Today on Monday (August 15), Rick Ross and his family were hit with hefty fines resulting from investigators discovering violations at those five Mississippi locations, such as forcing workers to illegally pay for uniforms, safety training, background checks, cash register shortages and more.

“Restaurant industry employees work hard, often for low wages, and many depend on every dollar earned to make ends meet,” Jackson’s Wage and Hour Division director, Audrey Hall, said in a statement.

“The law prevents Boss Wing Enterprises LLC from shifting operating costs to workers … or to allow a worker’s pay to fall below the minimum wage rate.”

As a result, The Department of Labor fined Rozay and his franchise company, Boss Wings Enterprises LLC, a total of $62,753 in civil penalties and recovered $51,674 in wages owed to 244 workers across the five stores.

The DOC unleashed a press release holding Ross and his company fully responsible, saying: “The operator of five Wing Stop franchise locations in Mississippi who made employees pay for their uniforms, safety training, background checks and cash register shortages – and violated child labor regulations – has been held accountable by the U.S. Department of Labor, and paid $114,427 in back wages, liquidated damages and civil penalties.”

“Set It Off” appeared on Doe Boy’s CATCH ME IF YOU CAN EP, which dropped just six months after the Cleveland-bred rapper’s latest album Oh Really, which featured appearances from Lil Uzi Vert, 42 Dugg, Moneybagg Yo, and Roddy Ricch.

Oh Really served as a follow-up to Doe Boy’s two 2020 releases, Demons R Us with Southside and 56 Birdz with DJ Esco, both of which arrived shortly after his 2019 album, Streetz Need Me 2.

Despite the violent street tales told in “Set It Off” and many of Doe Boy’s other songs, the 28-year-old told The Joe Budden Podcast back in March that Hip Hop is not to blame for street violence in the hood.

“It’s real shit going on,” he said. “You gotta think, n-ggas’ friends is getting killed — this shit going on. The music just adding [to it]. That shit gonna happen anyway, that’s another thing muthafuckas gotta understand. Even with us making gangsta music, you can’t blame us because no matter what, that shit gonna go on.”

Ezra Miller & ‘The Flash’ Everything To Know About The Fate Of DC Film & Its Troubled Star

The Flash is one of the most highly-anticipated upcoming superhero movies. The Warner Bros. project has already wrapped filming with Ezra Miller playing the titular character. But the film’s fate is now up in the air due to controversy surrounding Ezra. The 29-year-old actor (who uses they/them pronouns) has been arrested several times, with more troubling accusations continuing to mount against them — and they are now seeking “ongoing” mental health treatment as the allegations continue to mount. The Flash is supposed to be a game-changing film for the DC Extended Universe and fans have been dying to see it in theaters. Unfortunately, there’s a strong possibility that the movie never sees the light of day.

Below, HollywoodLife has rounded up everything you need to know about The Flash‘s current status. Plus, we’ve got all the updates on Ezra’s controversies and how they’ve caused an impact on the film’s release.

Ezra Miller was born in New Jersey and dropped out of high school to pursue an acting career. Their first movie was the 2008 drama film Afterschool. Ezra followed that up with the movies We Need to Talk About Kevin, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, and Trainwreck. The actor played Credence Barebone/Aurelius Dumbledore in Disney’s Fantastic Beasts franchise. Ezra’s most notable television role was the CBS miniseries The Stand. They also appeared in episodes of Royal Pains on USA Network.

Ezra Miller Arrested

The very first time that Ezra was arrested was in June 2011 when they were filming Perks of Being a Wallflower. Ezra was reportedly a passenger in a vehicle pulled over for a broken brake light in Pittsburg. Authorities discovered that Ezra allegedly had marijuana in their possession and charged the actor with drug possession. But the charges were eventually dropped and Ezra paid a $600 penalty, according to BuzzFeed News.

Ezra was arrested two more times in March and April 2022. The first arrest occurred on March 28 after an alleged physical altercation ensued between Ezra and other people at a karaoke bar in Hawaii. Ezra was charged with disorderly conduct and harassment. On April 19, Ezra was arrested again in Hawaii on suspicion of assault after allegedly throwing a chair at a 26-year-old woman. They pleaded no contest to disorderly conduct and was ordered to pay a $500 fine. In a plea deal, prosecutors dropped the harassment charge and an unrelated traffic charge.

In June 2022, Ezra was accused of harassing a 12-year-old child, Tokata “Gibson” Iron Eyes. The child’s parents filed a temporary harassment prevention order for Gibson and Gibson’s mother against Ezra in Massachusetts, which was granted. In court documents, the parents said, “Ezra uses violence, intimidation, threat of violence, fear, paranoia, delusions and drugs to hold sway over a young adolescent Tokata Ezra has brainwashed Tokata. Ezra Miller has ensured that Tokata is without a phone and has given her bankcard to another of his workers.”

But Tokata/Gibson denied their parents’ allegations against Ezra. “My father and his allegations hold no weight and are frankly transphobic and based in the notion that I am somehow incapable of coherent thought or opposing opinions to those of my own kindred worrying about my well being,” the child said in a statement on Instagram. “I am now aware of the severity of emotional and psychological manipulation I was made to endure while in my parents home.”

Ezra’s most recent arrest as of the time of publishing was on August 7. The actor was charged with felony burglary after allegedly stealing bottles of alcohol from a home three months earlier in Stamford, Vermont, according to CNN. Ezra is reportedly set to be arraigned in court on September 26.

On Monday, August 15, Ezra provided a statement to Variety, saying that they are seeking “ongoing” treatment. “Having recently gone through a time of intense crisis, I now understand that I am suffering complex mental health issues and have begun ongoing treatment,” Ezra told the publication. “I want to apologize to everyone that I have alarmed and upset with my past behavior. I am committed to doing the necessary work to get back to a healthy, safe and productive stage in my life.”

Ezra Miller as ‘The Flash’

Ezra made his film debut as Barry Allen/The Flash in 2016’s Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice. They had just a brief appearance in that movie, as well as Suicide Squad which came out that same year. They had a major role in 2017’s Justice League, alongside Ben Affleck as Batman, Henry Cavill as Superman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Jason Momoa as Aquaman, and Ray Fisher as Cyborg. Ezra was also featured in 2021’s Zac Snyder’s Justice League, which was original director Zac Snyder‘s cut of the film. After the Trump Raid Silence Is Not an Option for Merrick Garland

In his time as a federal prosecutor, Merrick Garland tried dozens of cases, from street crimes to the Oklahoma City bombing. During his more than twenty years on the bench as a federal judge, he issued hundreds of rulings, on issues ranging from national security to tax law. As Attorney General, he oversees the work of a hundred and sixteen thousand Justice Department staffers, including employees of the F.B.I. and several other federal law-enforcement agencies. But it is Garland’s decisions regarding the conduct of Donald Trump—in particular, decisions related to an F.B.I. raid on Mar-a-Lago, on Monday morning—that will define his legacy and either strengthen or erode public trust in the institution that he is trying to revive: the Justice Department.

The headlines, and Trump himself, have focussed on the role of F.B.I. agents in the search of his Florida home, but the raid, an unprecedented action against a former President, was almost certainly approved by Garland. The soft-spoken, sixty-nine-year-old Attorney General—famed for his deliberative style, caution, and reticence—now faces a significant political dilemma. If Garland does not indict Trump and reveal there is clear evidence that he committed a potential crime, he risks emboldening the lawlessness of the former President and his allies on the far right.

The raid may prove to have simply been an effort to recover classified documents that belong in secure government facilities. But Trump and his allies immediately cast the former President as the victim of a “deep state” plot—a false claim that Trump used throughout his Presidency to undermine public faith in investigations of his misconduct and, ultimately, in the outcome of the 2020 election—and declared it a central issue in the November midterm elections.

House Republicans quickly rallied around Trump. In a blunt threat, Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy castigated Garland, signalling that Republicans will investigate his conduct if they win control of the chamber. He accused the Attorney General, the country’s chief law-enforcement officer, of the “weaponization” of the Justice Department, telling him, in a tweet, “Preserve your documents and clear your calendar.” Ari Fleischer, George W. Bush’s former press secretary, attacked the Biden Administration as a whole. “This better be a slam dunk criminal case, otherwise the Biden Administration and DoJ have crossed a line of no return,” Fleischer tweeted. “If they got the goods, announce it. Otherwise this search on a former President’s home is a disgrace.”

Meanwhile, among Trump’s opponents, praise for the “Raid-a-Lago” and speculation that Trump would be indicted circulated widely online. Attention immediately focussed on a little-known federal law that makes it a crime when someone who has custody of government documents or records “willfully and unlawfully conceals, removes, mutilates, obliterates, falsifies or destroys” them. In January, officials from the National Archives removed from Mar-a-Lago fifteen boxes of records, some of them classified, that Trump had taken with him when he left the White House, in January of last year, two weeks after the storming of the Capitol. Some of those documents contain information that is considered to be “top secret,” the Washington Post reported. Federal prosecutors then began a grand-jury investigation and interviewed former White House staffers about Trump’s actions, and a small group of agents visited Mar-a-Lago to look for documents this spring, the Times reported. Trump, in a statement issued after the raid, on Monday, claimed that “after working and cooperating with the relevant Government agencies, this unannounced raid on my home was not necessary or appropriate.” A federal judge, nonetheless, had ruled that investigators had probable cause that a crime had been committed, and issued a search warrant.

An individual with knowledge of the probe said evidence that the former President had knowingly mishandled classified documents, by removing them from the White House, is strong. The person added that the evidence against Trump is more clear-cut than the evidence had been against Hillary Clinton with regard to her alleged mishandling of her e-mail when she was Secretary of State—something that Trump relentlessly attacked her for during the 2016 Presidential campaign. Clinton was never criminally charged. But prosecutors have brought charges for improperly removing or storing classified information against former government officials, including President Bill Clinton’s national-security adviser Sandy Berger. In 2007, after Donald Keyser, a former State Department official, admitted to storing several thousand classified documents in his basement, he was sentenced to a year in prison and three years of supervision.

David Laufman, a former D.O.J. prosecutor and senior official who has been critical of Trump, defended the search of Mar-a-Lago. “Having conducted and overseen multiple criminal investigations involving the mishandling of classified information, there is nothing unusual about the government executing a search warrant to recover classified material from a location where it is not legally authorized to be,” he said. “The only thing unusual in this case is that the classified material apparently was under the possession and control of a former President of the United States who fancies himself above the law.”

Trump, of course, wants to be President again. Legal scholars say past Supreme Court rulings suggest that the only requirements to run for the Presidency are the ones specifically described in the Constitution: being at least thirty-five-years old, a natural-born citizen, and a U.S. resident for at least fourteen years. Criminal convictions have not barred candidates in the past—and would not bar Trump—from running for President. As my colleague Amy Davidson Sorkin recently noted, “In 1920, Eugene V. Debs, a Socialist, ran for President from a prison cell in Atlanta, after being convicted of violating the Espionage Act of 1917, for speaking against military recruitment efforts. He got nearly a million votes.” Trump could get far more.

Those Supreme Court rulings were designed to empower voters, not prosecutors, to decide who can be elected President. For decades during the Cold War, federal prosecutors, F.B.I. agents, and politicians falsely smeared political candidates and civil-rights leaders as being Communists or subversives. Since Watergate, the Justice Department has strengthened rules that require prosecutors to keep investigations secret, and to not announce indictments at times when they can impact elections.

Garland has devoted his life to upholding those norms, but he must recognize that, a half century after Watergate, a new American political landscape exists. Now the best way for him to counter the former President’s false narratives and to create public trust in the Justice Department is to prioritize transparency over secrecy. Silence is not an option in the post-Trump era. Trump and his allies will take any opportunity to attack and discredit the Justice Department, the F.B.I., the January 6th committee, prosecutors in Georgia and New York, and anyone else who investigates the former President as engaging in a political “witch hunt.” Trump almost certainly received a copy of the search warrant and could release it publicly, but is unlikely to do so. Hours after announcing the raid, he began to use it as a fund-raising tool. Garland remained silent. Whatever may have been found in Mar-a-Lago, Justice Department officials apparently hope, will speak louder than Trump. ♦

In the midst of trying to negotiate a long-term deal with Chicago, Smith has apparently had enough. He is the centerpiece of the Bears’ defense and would be a great get for nearly every team. In fact, nearly every team would be upgrading their defense by adding Smith.

So, should the New England Patriots make this deal?

There are a few things to unpack here. The first thing is the likelihood that he is actually traded. Bears’ General Manager Ryan Poles has been nothing short of a disaster thus far, and his top priority should be trying to develop Justin Fields.

Having an All-Pro linebacker doesn’t really help that. Poles needs players and draft capital to make this happen. He needs to infuse the offensive line with more talent and add legitimate NFL receivers to the team.

Trading Roquan Smith could net both players and draft picks, so thinking about this in the long-term, it does make sense to trade Smith if the conditions between him and the Bears are beyond saving.

Next, what would it take to get Smith? Well, it’ll likely take a mix of players and draft capital. The Patriots have adequate storages of both, so I think they could put together an enticing package. If you couple this with the Patriots not being great at drafting, I think it would make sense to part with a draft pick or two to get a surefire player.

Players that stick out as someone that the Bears could want are Isaiah Wynn and Nelson Agholor. Agholor might be the odd man out in the receiver room, and it appears as if Wynn was demoted to right tackle.

Mike Onwenu can play tackle, and can play it well, so the team could simply slide him over.

Nelson Agholor didn’t do anything wrong, but the additions of DeVante Parker and Tyquan Thornton might make Agholor expendable.

The Bears could desperately use a quality receiver and offensive linemen.

In fact, Agholor would likely be the second option behind Darnell Mooney, and Wynn would easily be their most talented lineman.

The Patriots would also likely have to include a draft pick in this, which I don’t think would be a huge deal.

The team would then have to workout a long-term extension with limited cap space, which gets much larger next offseason.

Being that the Patriots’ offense hasn’t looked good in training camp thus far, relying on the defense more might be the move, and Roquan Smith can greatly improve that unit.

“They said that he was Diddy’s boy toy,” Envy said to Charlamage, who proceeded to do a quick Google search about the story. “I was in Jamaica with him,” Osiris explained while Charlamagne looked it up.

“Oh, I see it now,” Charlamagne said, after finding a story on the alleged relationship. He then read out the headline: “YK Osiris in Jamaica with his alleged boo Diddy,” before asking the Def Jam singer: “Why you did this to Diddy, man? That’s messed up, man.”

“I don’t know what happened with that,” Osiris said. “It be crazy little talking stuff … I ain’t worried about it … A lot of people don’t care about it … I was laughing.”

YK Osiris then explained the reason he was in Jamaica was because he was on vacation with a woman, and although Diddy was also on the island, they weren’t together.

In other YK Osiris news, the Jacksonville crooner recently seized a moment to make a move on Lizzo in a very flirtatious Instagram video.

“What’s up Lizzo? I just wanna say hey,” Osiris said. “You beautiful Black queen. I don’t wanna go too far but you’re beautiful and yeah. Check your DM though, alright?”

While it’s unclear if Lizzo ever responded to Osiris’s advances, she has previously admitted that she has a penchant for drunk DMing celebrities.

In a TikTok video uploaded to Lizzo’s account in 2021 titled “Don’t Drink & DM,” the Grammy Award-winner claimed she slid into the DM’s of Captain Americaheartthrob Chris Evans after a bit too much booze.

Meanwhile, Diddy’s debut album No Way Out reached a significant milestone last month when it turned 25 years old. To mark the occasion, the Bad Boy Records mogul released a special anniversary edition of the classic LP.

ECHO & THE BUNNYMEN’S IAN MCCULLOCH SINGS AT HAPPY MONDAYS’ PAUL RYDER’S FUNERAL

Echo and The Bunnymen’s Ian McCulloch has sung at Happy Mondays’ Paul Ryder’s funeral.

Ryder, who was the bassist of the Happy Mondays and brother of frontman Shaun, died final month on the age of 58.

Posting the information on social media, the band wrote: “The Ryder family and Happy Mondays band members are deeply saddened and shocked to say that Paul Ryder passed away this morning. A true pioneer and legend. He will be forever missed.”

Alan McGee, who was in attendance on the service, described it as an “amazing send off” and recalled how he spoke originally of the funeral, which occurred in Manchester yesterday (August 4). McGee additionally shared that each McCulloch and Rowetta later sang on the funeral in tribute.

“Amazing send off for my friend Paul Ryder of @happymondaysofficial today in Mancunia .. ian brown / bez and me all shared our memories of Horse ..,” McGee wrote. “Rowetta and Ian [McCulloch] both sang .. I’m glad I spoke at the beginning as the service went on it seemed to get heavier .. at one point I looked up [and] every member of the band was crying .. we loved you Paul Ryder.”

Rowetta added her personal tribute to Ryder on social media writing “we love you so much”.

Others paying their respects on the funeral included Stone Roses’ Ian Brown, Happy Mondays bandmate Bez and former New Order bass participant and now solo artist Peter Hook.
