KANYE WEST’S ‘DONDA 2’ FEATURES XXXTENTACION TRAVIS SCOTT ALICIA KEYS PUSHA T MARILYN MANSON SOULJA BOY & MORE

Kanye West held the Donda 2 listening event at Miami’s LoanDepot Park on Tuesday night (February 22). After over two hours of playing nothing but a heartbeat, the main attraction began with a burning replica of his childhood home and Kanye dressed in head-to-toe black.

Wading through water and enveloped in smoke, Kanye blazed through each song and was soon joined by The Game for the previously released “Eazy.” When Ye got to the line about Kim Kardashian’s boyfriend Pete Davidson, the crowd cheered as he spit, “God saved me from that crash/Just so I can beat Pete Davidson’s ass (Who?).”

Kanye West was then joined by 2 Chainz and Migos while dozens of armored soldiers surrounded them, their faces obscured by black helmets. But throughout the project, there were so many lines directed squarely at Kardashian that it became quickly apparent the album is a primarily sad affair.

“Keep the flowers, sent a hundred thousand,” he raps, possibly a reference to the truck load of flowers he sent her on Valentine’s Day. “When you give them everything/They always want more” and “Never stand between a man and his kids/I’ll put your security at risk” also sounded like nods to his failed marriage and Kardashian’s new relationship.

Even so, Pusha T brought the energy level up when he joined Ye for “Diet Coke,” which the Clipse MC released earlier this month. Kentucky-bred rapper Jack Harlow, with all of his posturing, stepped up next and spit a few bars before the next song started.

The album took another sad turn when vocals from Kardashian’s Saturday Night Live monologue started blaring over the speakers: “I married the best rapper of all time/Not only that, he’s the richest Black man in America/A talented, legit genius who gave me four incredible kids.” The ominous song that followed found Kanye rapping about how he needs to “remove” himself from the situation before he “loses” himself.

Anticipation for an André 3000 appearance, whose bars on “Life of the Party” won the 2021 HipHopDX Verse of the Year, sadly didn’t lead anywhere, but fans were shocked to hear the late XXXTENTACION pop up. Notes of Carl Orff’s masterpiece “O Fortuna” floated through the air as the show continued.

Marilyn Manson and DaBaby eventually surfaced for “Jail,” which Kanye did for the Donda listening event in Chicago last summer as some sort of statement on cancel culture. Alicia Keys also donated her talents to the event, playing and singing the hook from Fivio Foreign and Kanye’s “City Of Gods” collaboration.

Other contributors include Playboi Carti, Soulja Boy (finally), Baby Keem, Don Toliver and Vory. But anyone wanting to get their hands on Donda 2 will have to purchase a stem player for around $200. The album won’t be available on Apple Music, Spotify, Amazon, YouTube or any other streaming services as part of Kanye’s “anti-streaming revolution” — at least not yet.

DJ JAZZY JEFF SAYS WILL SMITH’S NEW ‘BEL-AIR’ MIGHT BE HIS ‘FAVORITE SHOW EVER’

The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air premiered in 1991 with Will Smith in the lead role and DJ Jazzy Jeff his ever-faithful sidekick “Jazz.” The beloved sitcom ran for six seasons, seamlessly blending Hip Hop with comedy until the Banks family was a household name.

Twenty-six years after its final episode, the show is getting a reboot — but not in a way that was likely expected. On February 13, Peacock premiered the inaugural episode of Bel-Air, a drama based on Will, Jazz, Carlton, Hillary, Ashley, Uncle Phil, Jeffery and Aunt Viv’s lives.

Starring Jabari Banks as Will, the show follows the savvy teen from the mean streets of Philly to the utopian world of Bel-Air where he moves in with his wealthy family to escape “a couple of guys who were up to no good.”

The streaming platform has only released four episodes so far, but the storyline is instantly intriguing to anyone who grew up watching The Fresh Prince. In a recent interview with HipHopDX, DJ Jazzy Jeff talked about the new series as he applauded executive producer and longtime partner-in-rhyme Will Smith on the show.

“I wasn’t involved in the making [of the show], but I am one of the hosts of the official Bel Air Podcast that’s coming out. I am super-duper excited because, without giving any spoilers, if someone was to take The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air in the ’90s and move it to ’20 to ’22 and put a dramatic spin on it, I don’t think they could have done a better job.

“I think more people are going to be talking about Bel-Air than the Super Bowl. It is that good. If I take myself out of it, this is mind-blowing. This might be my favorite show ever.”The Bel-Air: Official Podcast debuted on February 14 with DJ Jazzy Jeff and co-host Aida Osman. For the inaugural episode, they spoke to Bel-Air director and executive producer Morgan Cooper and followed up with an interview with Cooper, composers Terrace Martin and Robert Glasper and co-showrunner Rasheed Newson about how important fashion and music are to the show for Episode 2.

LIL BABY CONFIRMS NEW MUSIC ON THE WAY EVEN AS ‘MY TURN’ REMAINS ON BILLBOARD 200

Lil Baby confirmed on Twitter on Monday (February 21) that both new music and a new album are nearing completion, even while his blockbuster sophomore effort My Turn remains comfortably on the Billboard 200.

“Album Almost Done,” Baby tweeted out. “New Music Otw Tho.”

The announcement came after Baby retweeted a post from Chart Data which confirmed Baby’s My Turn had spent 100 total weeks on the Billboard 200. Not only that, the album has “never left the top 100 and still ranks” in the “top 20.”

Lil Baby’s monstrous 2020 album My Turn dropped on February 28 and immediately shot to the No. 1 spot on the Billboard 200 its debut week. The project went double platinum before the year was up, reportedly raking in over $19 million in the process, all while Baby made off with HipHopDX’s Rapper of the Year award.

The album featured appearances from Gunna, 42 Dugg, Future, Lil Uzi Vert, Lil Wayne, Moneybagg Yo and Rylo Rodriguez and was supported by the singles “Woah,” “Sum 2 Prove,” “Emotionally Scarred,” “All In” and the Grammy Award-nominated track “The Bigger Picture,” which was eventually crowned HipHopDX’s Hip Hop Song of the year.

Aside from working on new music, the Atlanta rapper has also been hitting the studio with Nicki Minaj, collabing on her first new batch of tunes since 2018. Baby lent his talents to “Bussin” and “Do We Have a Problem?” and Nicki even said Baby bodied her on the former.

“First of all, I want to just say shout out to Lil Baby,” Nicki said in an IG Live session. “Y’all know I always keep it real about verses and all of that… Lil Baby, he might have… ummm… he might have got me!

She later said, “The way he pushed himself and his pen, I loved it. He bodied, bodied, bodied. Shout out to him for just being dope and down to earth and sweet. All of that.”

The Chicago lyricist recently dropped Hall of Fame 2.0 last December,which served as the sequel to his blockbuster Hall of Fame project. Akademiks revealed the sequel only ended up selling 79,000 units its first week, which Polo blamed on a leak that happened earlier in December. While the leak was a bummer, Polo said he was unphased because of crazy new music he has in the works with 808Mafia’s Southside.

Kodak even remarked how he lost money on the Super Bowl after betting $30,000 on the Cincinnati Bengals. The Bengals lost the big game to the Los Angeles Rams, 23-20.

On the same day as gifting his mother her expensive new home, Kodak decided to jump on Instagram Live and give fans a first-hand glimpse of his wounds from the shooting.

“Whatever, n-gga take his licks,” he said in the clip while counting stacks of cash. “At the end of the day, n-gga ain’t hidin’.” He then points the camera toward his leg, which is bandaged up and settled in a brace.

Kodak’s lawyer, Bradford Cohen, told NBC News the shooting started with an “unprovoked attack” on someone Kodak was hanging around with at the time. When Kodak and security came to their aid, “several shots were fired at them by an unidentified assailant.”

Cohen added, “Kodak was struck in the leg. It was not life-threatening, he will make a full recovery, and he is in stable condition.”

After joining forces with Kanye West and Alicia Keys for his anthemic “City Of Gods” release, Fivio Foreign has brought the record to life with a dynamic tonal performance visual.

On Friday (February 18), Fivio Foreign delivered the black and white video for the single, which features spotlight illuminated cameos from both Alicia Keys and Kanye West. As the Brooklyn Drill rapper Woo walks during the performance of his verse, Ye seemingly feeds off of Fivio’s energy and explodes in a lyrical rage that is only limited by the constraints of his full-body motorcycle suit.

In a tweet on February 17 ahead of the video drop, Fivio Foreign actually remarked on how amazing it was to watch Kanye West pulling the strings to make the video happen behind the scenes.

NICKI MINAJ GETS TROLLED BY PHILADELPHIA HEALTH DEPARTMENT OVER SWOLLEN TESTICLES CLAIM

Sometimes people say things the general public won’t let them live down. Nicki Minaj made waves online in September when she fired off an unconfirmed claim about the COVID-19 vaccine allegedly turning a cousin’s friend impotent.

The Public Health Department of Philadelphia clearly hasn’t forgotten about the wild story, which they used to jab at Nicki Minaj on Thursday (February 17).

A day earlier, Nicki tweeted, “Nothing like watching someone speak confidently about something they know nothing about.”

Philly’s Public Health Department then tried to make Minaj look bad by having the tweet backfire when they quoted her message with the famous story about her cousin in Trinidad’s friend’s testicles and an eyes emoji.

“My cousin in Trinidad won’t get the vaccine cuz his friend got it and became impotent,” she wrote in September. “His testicles became swollen. His friend was weeks away from getting married, now the girl called out the wedding. So just pray on it & make sure you’re comfortable with your decision, not bullied.”

Nicki’s tweet quickly went viral and was the trending topic of conversation for the week, which was met with mixed reactions. U.S. public health expert Dr. Anthony Fauci even addressed the Queens native’s claims during an interview with CNN where he downplayed any sort of connection between the COVID-19 vaccines and impotence.

“The only way we know to counter mis and disinformation is to provide a lot of correct information and to essentially debunk these kinds of claims, which may be innocent on her part,” Fauci explained. “I’m not blaming her for anything. But she should be thinking twice about propagating information that really has no basis except a one-off anecdote. And that’s not what science is all about.”

Nicki Minaj responded to the tweet on Friday evening (February 18) by calling out Philly’s Health Department for using her for engagement.

“Philadelphia’s public health account is posting Nicki Minaj tweets for engagement,” she wrote. “They are attempting to shame ppl for advising others to PRAY, be COMFORTABLE & NOT BE BULLIED. I’ve never seen a vaccine trigger this amount of shaming & fear tactics have you?”

The Dipset Capo went to a Gucci store to do the same thing as Bandman Kevo, but the only difference was it wasn’t his birthday. According to Jim’s video footage, no one in the store wanted to help him or his friends and claimed they were being racially profiled.

BLXST KEEPS WINNING FEATURE STREAK ALIVE WITH BUDDY COLLABORATION ‘WAIT TOO LONG’

Buddy has returned with his first new batch of music since 2018’s Harlan & Alondra, and it features an appearance from 2021 HipHopDX Rising Star Blxst, who has already hopped on tracks with Fireboy DML, 21 Savage, Wale and Murda Beatz in 2022.

The new song “Wait Too Long” was also given the visual treatment, with the Obsidian-directed video following both artists as they struggle to handle the clean-up of a massive party while Buddy navigates some hurdles involving a woman he’s romantically pursuing.

The Compton rapper also announced the release date of his forthcoming album Superghetto, which is currently set to drop March 25.

“It’s more about the essence [of] growing up in the hood,” Buddy told Zane Lowe in a recent interview on Apple Music 1. “I’m from there, so it’s in me not on me and I take it everywhere I go. Everyone else just has to conform to the energy I’m bringing to the table. That’s what the album sounds like. My experience, from my perspective… the beat selection…its a bunch of different flows and cadences.”

2018’s Harlan & Alondra featured appearances from Ty Dolla $ign, A$AP Ferg, Guapdad 4000, Snoop Dogg and Khalid. He followed up the project with a deluxe version in 2019, which featured four new feature-heavy songs including “Cubicle” with 03 Greedo and a Thundercat and Flying Lotus-produced track called “Link Up,” featuring Kent Jamz, Guapdad 4000, Bas, J.I.D and vocalist Ari Lennox.

As for Blxst, he dropped off the visual for his latest single “About You” in January. The video was directed by Alfredo Flores and was shot entirely in black-and-white as Blxst reflected on having to navigate life’s path alone, despite wanting to have a beautiful and supportive partner to help guide the way.

BLUEFACE SAYS CHRISEAN ROCK WROTE ‘I LOVE BLUE’ IN BLOOD BEFORE STEALING HIS G-WAGON

Blueface has leaked several text messages between himself and his former artist Chrisean Rock, who was arrested on Monday (February 14) for stealing his Mercedes G-Wagon and allegedly selling crack-cocaine.

The “Thotiana” rapper shared multiple Instagram posts on Tuesday (February 15) alleging she wrote “I love Blue” in blood before taking off with his vehicle. He wrote across the photo of it, “This some fatal attraction type shit.”

As if that wasn’t enough, Blueface exposed the presumed insanity going on with the seemingly troubled singer in the series of texts. In the first slide, she was desperately trying to find Blueface, but he continued to ignore her as she said things such as, “Why can’t I come where u at??? I’m ducked up. Wtf” and “U acting like Daddy. Wtf. We ain’t family. Daddy.”

When Chrisean Rock replied, “Nvm it’s coo God got me,” he said, “Nah, you trippin the devil has got you now.” But she insisted her mother needed her, while Blueface argued, “You’re useless to your mom in jail. You’re only gonna cause more pain on your family. I don’t think you fully understand the crimes you committed. You’re driving a stolen car with bad tags and … you left your DNA at the crime scene.”

She continued, “Nobody going to jail. Stop texting me like u against me.” Blueface then wrote, “I can’t stop the cops rock. I had to report it stolen … I have responsibilities rock i have car insurance for this reason. I didn’t know it was you till I seen the blood on the wall. cops was already there at that point took your DNA. You could have just asked me. N-gga would have flew you back.”

Obviously, the young woman did end up going to jail, but inmate records in Tulsa and Oklahoma City came up empty so it’s unclear if she’s still behind bars. Wack 100 roasted her for the arrest in an Instagram post of his own.

“This Bozo deserves all that she has coming to her!” he wrote. “Broke in the house again stole thousands stole the G Waggon as we found out not knowing it was her 1700 miles away got caught. SNOOP DOGG SAYS DEATH ROW WILL BE AN NFT LABEL ‘I WANT TO BE THE 1ST MAJOR IN THE METAVERSE’

Snoop Dogg has only just settled into his seat as the new owner of Death Row Records, but already he has big plans for the iconic gangsta rap label.

Rather than follow in the infamous Suge Knight‘s footsteps, though, Tha Doggfather is looking to open a new chapter in Death Row’s history by ushering the company into today’s technology-driven era.

Less than a week after acquiring the brand from MNRK Music Group for an undisclosed (but no doubt handsome) sum, Snoop jumped on Clubhouse on Tuesday (February 15) and revealed his plans to bring Death Row into the metaverse.

“Death Row will be an NFT label,” he announced on the virtual platform. “We will be putting out artists through the metaverse. Just like we broke the industry when we was the first independent to be major, I want to be the first major in the metaverse.”

While Snoop Dogg didn’t go into any more detail about his metaverse plans, this won’t be Death Row’s first venture into the world of NFTs (non-fungible tokens).

Last March, the label launched a series of NFTs called “Series 1: Nobody Does It Better” as part of its 30th anniversary celebrations. The collection included ultra-rare diamond medallion and necklace NFTs starting at $30,030.30.

Snoop Dogg is no stranger to the metaverse, either. Last December, he launched his own interactive world called the Snoopverse, where one NFT user paid $450,000 to become his virtual neighbor.

Uncle Snoop also made his latest album, Bacc On Death Row — his first release on Death Row since 1996 — available as an NFT worth $5,000 through the blockchain gaming company Gala Games.

QUEEN NAJIA LINKS UP WITH BIG SEAN FOR NEW SINGLE ‘HATE OUR LOVE’

Detroit artists Queen Najia and Big Sean have joined forces for the former’s new track “Hate Our Love.” The new track features a sample of Bobby Glenn’s 1970s song “Sounds Like A Love Song,” and celebrates an enduring love that goes through ups and downs.

“What I’d like for people to take away from ‘Hate Our Love’ is don’t let anybody come in between anything or anyone that you love,” Queen Naija said in a statement. “I’m so excited to finally collaborate with Big Sean on a record…it’s been a dream of mine for a while now. With both of us being from Detroit, it felt like the perfect match up and I hope everyone loves the song!”

On Thursday (February 3), Big Sean joined Queen Naija on Instagram Live to discuss the new track, but in doing so also dropped a few hints about a new TWENTY88 album with Jhené Aiko. When Naija asked what else was on his plate, Sean Don spoke earnestly about the project.

“I’m here working on [a] new album and new TWENTY88, me and Jhené,” the Detroit rapper said with a grin. “Shit, we’ve been working on it for a little bit… It’s coming along good, though.”

Big Sean and Jhené Aiko’s TWENTY88 debut hit No. 5 on the Billboard 200 in 2016, selling 40,000 copies in its first week.

The rapper first spoke about a potential follow-up record during an appearance on Ebro In The Morning in 2020.

“Yeah, I hope so,” he said when asked if the duo would ever collab again. “Collabing with [Jhené] is like one of the easiest things ever, you know? When we both are in a mood, you know? ‘Cause when you in a relationship, too, sometimes you can be irritated with each other.”

CHUCK INGLISH USES CLASSIC OUTKAST ALBUMS TO DESCRIBE THE COOL KIDS’ ‘BEFORE SHIT GOT WEIRD’ ALBUM

The Cool Kids are gearing up to release a new project for the first time since their 2020 album Volumes. On Friday (February 4), Chuck Inglish and Sir Michael Rocks performed a medley of both their early hits (“Black Mags”) and newer material (the KEY!-featuring “Hibachi’) as a part of their appearance on the Kid Cudi-backed augmented reality live streaming app Encore.

During their exclusive stream, the pair of seasoned artists/producers virtually touched base with hundreds of their die-hard fans and gave detailed updates about their upcoming album Before Shit Got Weird. To start, Sir Mikey explained the structure of the release, which has already spawned three singles, including the Larry June-assisted “All Or Nothing.”

“It is a triple album,” Sir Michael Rocks said in part. “So from him [Chuck Inglish] a solo from myself and the group [The Cool Kids] album as well. So that is three albums all coming out, man.”

Chuck Inglish proceeded to expand, revealing the motivation behind the triple album release was to enhance the experience for fans rather than just dropping off a deluxe project.

“I wanted to give an album a little bit more of an experience than just, you know, a Thursday night, 16 songs, you know, nothing else comes with it.” he explained. “Somebody gonna drop a deluxe with two extra songs, that doesn’t catch my attention.”

He continued, referencing Outkast’s beloved Stankonia and Speakerboxxx/The Love Below albums as reference points for the structure of the release. “So I like to make things that I would be into,” Chuck Inglish said. “So it’s like, like Stankonia and then Speakerboxxx/The Love Below. I’m not saying that’s how we came. I’m just talking about the packaging, you know?”

The Detroit native also spoke about the lucid source of inspiration he tapped into throughout the process of producing the album — which he says took about two weeks.

“Everything is produced by me,” Inglish added. “Someone asked, ‘What’s the album sound like?’ It sounds how we started it, on acid, right? That’s how this album started. The motivation behind it is I think we found our globe by thinking the world was gone end in March of 2020. I didn’t think we would ever tour in, so I didn’t have no direction for when I was making stuff. I just wanted to make stuff again and it’d be fun. And I had some gnarly ass acid. And, we took a lot of it in the desert and all of these beats was made two weeks.”

Since Kid Cudi co-founded Encore in 2020 with Ian Edelman, who he worked with on HBO’s How To Make It In America, the virtual reality app has pressed forward with producing concerts in the metaverse and hosted performances by artists such as Bay Area rap legend Too $hort and Columbia Records signee SSGKobe.

Just over a week ago, Chuck Inglish told HipHopDX his intentions for The Cool Kids new album lies in his appreciation for multiple eras of Hip Hop.

“I hope this one spreads like wildfire,” he said in part. “If you ever liked rap music for something, this has got all the elements that brought me to it. The reverse drums is always a classic Hip Hop staple. I wanted to give the same emotion and reaction that I had to certain Hip Hop songs that completely made me a different human being after I listened to them. I called it ‘It’s Yours Pt. 2’ influenced by Wu-Tang’s version off the Wu-Tang Forever album — not a sonic influence but an energetic influence.”

In addition to KEY! and Larry June, The Cool Kids’ Before Shit Got Weird album also boasts features from Guapdad 4000, 6LACK, Chance The Rapper, Pac Div, Don Cannon, Nic Jr, Gabby!, Pell and Canadian producer A-Trak.
