Celebrating the U.K. singer-songwriter’s biggest hits on the site.

Sam Smith has been riding high on the Genius Top Songs chart all month with “Unholy,” their writhing, clanging, choir-inflected collaboration with Kim Petras. The song page was racking up hundreds of thousands of pageviews even before the song’s official release, and that’s a testament to Smith’s enduring popularity. A full decade after they came on the scene by guesting on Disclosure’s 2012 dance smash “Latch,” Smith remains a top-tier pop star whose lyrics warrant close reading.

In honor of “Unholy” and the album that’s slated to follow, we’ve examined the Genius data and ranked Smith’s Top 5 songs on the site as measured by pageviews. At No. 1 on the list with 7.8M views is “Too Good at Goodbyes,” the jaded ballad that served as the lead single off Smith’s 2017 sophomore album, The Thrill Of It All. Smith sings from the POV of a battle-scarred romantic who’s wary of getting hurt again. They’ve built a wall around themselves, and as Smith details in the second verse, that can give people the wrong idea.

“Too Good at Goodbyes” topped the charts in Smith’s native U.K., as did the No. 2 song on our list, “Stay With Me,” (2.1M pageviews) the second single off Smith’s debut album, 2014’s In the Lonely Hour. (It also reached No. 2 in America, serving as Smith’s stateside breakthrough.) With its minimal drum-and-piano instrumentation and gospel-inspired backing vocals, “Stay With Me” is the polar opposite of “Too Good at Goodbyes.” Instead of being callused and closed off, Smith is vulnerable and very open about needing affection. The song opens with Smith waking up next to someone and pleading with them not to hurry off.

Next up is “I’m Not the Only One,” (1.2M) the third single from In the Lonely Hour. Musically, this one has a hair more verve than “Stay With Me,” but Smith is arguably in a stickier predicament. Their partner has cheated on them and completely destroyed their trust. Still, Smith isn’t ready to say goodbye.

Coming in at No. 4 is “Pray,” (928.2K pageviews) the second single off The Thrill Of It All. Once again, Smith adopts a gospel feel, though they admit in the lyrics that they’ve renounced the religion of their youth. The nonbinary singer was raised Catholic, and a youngster, they would speak out against the church’s views on homosexuality. There’s a degree of skepticism in the chorus, as Smith considers appealing to a higher power in the midst of personal struggles and global tragedies.

Rounding out the Top 5 is Smith’s U.K.-chart-topping 2018 Calvin Harris team-up “Promises” (860.7K views). While Smith has obviously become known for emotionally devastating slow songs (see the other four songs on this list), they’re also magic over four-on-the-floor beats. On “Promises,” Smith plays a person who knows they have issues (“I’m ruined”) but refuses to let any of their messy baggage get in the way of a hook-up. It’s an unapologetic booty call infused with just a hint of pain.

With “Unholy” already close to 500K pageviews and a new album in the works, it’s very possible Sam Smith’s Top 5 songs on Genius will change over the next year. The honesty and poignancy of his lyrics will likely stay the same.

Arctic Monkeys – Body Paint

[Verse 1]

For a master of deception and subterfuge

You’ve made yourself quite the bed to lie in

Do your time travelling through the tanning booth

So you don’t let the sun catch you crying

[Chorus]

So predictable, I know what you’re thinking

[Verse 2]

My teeth are beating and my knees are weak

It’s as if there’s something up with the wiring

You can poke your head behind the mountain peak

Don’t have to mean that you’ve gone into hiding

[Chorus]

So predictable, I know what you’re thinking

[Bridge]

I’m watching your every move

I feel the tears are coming on

It won’t be long

It won’t be long

Straight from the cover shoot

Still a trace of body paint

On your legs and on your arms and on your face

And I’m keeping on my costume

And calling it a writing tool

And if you’re thinking of me

I’m probably thinking of you

[Instrumental Break]

[Refrain]

There’s still a trace of body paint

On your legs and on your arms and on your face

There’s still a trace of body paint

On your legs and on your arms and on your face

There’s still a trace of body paint

On your legs and on your arms and on your face

There’s still a trace of body paint

On your legs and on your arms and on your face

[Chorus]

So predictable, I know what you’re thinking

[Outro]

Ooh, ha

Yeah

Gangsta’s Paradise
Gangsta’s Paradise

[Verse 1: Coolio]

As I walk through the valley of the shadow of death

I take a look at my life and realize there’s nothin’ left

‘Cause I’ve been blastin’ and laughin’ so long, that

Even my momma thinks that my mind is gone

But I ain’t never crossed a man that didn’t deserve it

Me be treated like a punk, you know that’s unheard of

You better watch how you talkin’ and where you walkin’

Or you and your homies might be lined in chalk

I really hate to trip, but I gotta loc

As they croak, I see myself in the pistol smoke

Fool, I’m the kinda G the little homies wanna be like

On my knees in the night, sayin’ prayers in the streetlight

[Chorus: LV]

Been spendin’ most their lives livin’ in the gangsta’s paradise

Been spendin’ most their lives livin’ in the gangsta’s paradise

Keep spendin’ most our lives livin’ in the gangsta’s paradise

Keep spendin’ most our lives livin’ in the gangsta’s paradise

[Verse 2: Coolio]

Look at the situation they got me facin’

I can’t live a normal life, I was raised by the state

So I gotta be down with the hood team

Too much television watchin’ got me chasin’ dreams

I’m a educated fool with money on my mind

Got my ten in my hand and a gleam in my eye

I’m a loc’d out gangsta, set trippin’ banger

And my homies is down so don’t arouse my anger

Fool, death ain’t nothin’ but a heart beat away

I’m livin’ life do or die, what can I say?

I’m 23 now, but will I live to see 24?

The way things is goin’ I don’t know

[Refrain: LV]

Tell me why are we so blind to see

That the ones we hurt are you and me?

[Chorus: LV]

Been spendin’ most their lives livin’ in the gangsta’s paradise

Been spendin’ most their lives livin’ in the gangsta’s paradise

Keep spendin’ most our lives livin’ in the gangsta’s paradise

Keep spendin’ most our lives livin’ in the gangsta’s paradise

[Verse 3: Coolio]

Power and the money, money and the power

Minute after minute, hour after hour

Everybody’s runnin’, but half of them ain’t lookin’

It’s goin’ on in the kitchen, but I don’t know what’s cookin’

They say I gotta learn, but nobody’s here to teach me

If they can’t understand it, how can they reach me?

I guess they can’t, I guess they won’t

I guess they frontin’, that’s why I know my life is out of luck, fool!

[Chorus: LV]

Been spendin’ most their lives livin’ in the gangsta’s paradise

Been spendin’ most their lives livin’ in the gangsta’s paradise

Keep spendin’ most our lives livin’ in the gangsta’s paradise

You say the coast is clear

But you won’t catch me out

Better have conviction

‘Cause we want crimes of passion

Survival of the fittest

You’re either with us or you can keep it

And I’m floating like a cannonball

[Chorus]

This is why I don’t leave the house

You say the coast is clear

But you won’t catch me out

Wilbur Soot Wants A New Persona On New Song “Soft Boy”

Wilbur Soot Wants A New Persona On New Song “Soft Boy”
Wilbur Soot Wants A New Persona On New Song “Soft Boy”

It’s his first solo single since 2021’s “Maybe I Was Boring.”

After spending much of the latter half of 2021 focusing on his band Lovejoy, Wilbur Soot is back with his latest solo single, “Soft Boy.” The song is the Twitch gamer-turned-musician’s first release since 2021’s “Maybe I Was Boring,” and after waiting nearly a year in anticipation, fans sent “Soft Boy” straight into the upper reaches of the Genius Top Songs chart.

Soot considers “Soft Boy” the sequel to his biggest hit to date, 2021’s “Your New Boyfriend.” That song has amassed over 172 million Spotify streams, so naturally, making its follow-up created a bit of pressure. “‘Your New Boyfriend’ was my magnum opus. I don’t think I could do anything better,” Soot explained in a Twitch stream. “So it’s like, making ‘Soft Boy’ … It’s scary, you know? It’s terrifying.”

Soot starts off “Soft Boy” in a dark place. On the opening verse, he’s still struggling to get over a breakup and his diet consists solely of ramen.

I’m in too deep

It’s the same dried ramen in a bowl I’m too lazy to clean

But I’m not drunk texting my ex anymore

I hope my father could be proud of me

On the chorus, Soot starts his campaign against being called a “soft boy,” a term given to seemingly sensitive young men who wind up being just as bad as the more blatantly toxic “fuck boys” they claim to disdain. For one, he’s not wearing an ahegao hoodie, or a trendy style of sweatshirt among soft boys covered in close-up images of hentai characters’ faces.

It’s not an ahegao hoodie, it’s a work of art

I get turned on by my reflection in passing cars

I’m looking for a window to another world

Later in the hook, we learn that his desire to not be seen as soft might have something to do with his breakup. Nice guys finish last and all that.

I just don’t wanna be a soft boy anymore

I wanna be yours

On the second verse, Soot reverts back to his old ways. He can’t quite quit his soft boy habits, like getting the same haircut and trying to please his parents.

I’m in too deep

It’s the same hairstyle that I’ve had since I was seventeen

And I don’t know why

Mother, are you proud of me?

“Soft boy” arrived alongside an official music video, which sees Soot eat ramen, wear an ahegao hoodie, and cry in his room alone, among other soft boy activities.

Ay, mummy

(I’m claiming it, man)

Claim it, Amen

(I’m claiming it)

Claim it, haha

(I said I’m not going econ—, economy)

(Stormzy is my son)

Brap

[Verse]

I been the G.O.A.T. for so long, I guess it’s not exciting when I win

Boohoo, someone grab the violins

Every time I try a ting, top bins like Haile when he sings

So of course they don’t like me, I’m the king

Aight, tell me why, why would I reply to him?

I leave him hanging like Kyrie on the rim

Where do I begin? I wear the 5990 in the gym

I got a thing for shiny little things

What can I say? I’m like a young Black Biden with a trim (Woo)

Presidential when I’m ridin’ in the Bimz

Taking pictures with my cameraman, I’m shining in my skin

For eight-figures, I’m Aubameyang, I go and sign the ting, aight

I never wonder about who I could’ve been ‘cah I’m here

Rose Gold, frosted or ceramic

Told bro spin it, so he span it

We are not the same, big Mike’s from a whole different—

Top bins, what a set piece, fling it in the net

Could’ve Jet Li kick him till he bled

And I’m rent-free living in their head

What’s that quote? Ooh, “kill ’em with success”

Talking smoke, please, give it all a—

Still dripping in finesse (Goddamn)

Man, I got figures and flows, I’m a different kind of F

Got a Lambo and a Rolls, that’s a different kind of cheque

And I said I was the G.O.A.T., they didn’t listen when I—

Aight, any time I do a big fletch, just ignore me

Niggas wanna hear my side of the story

Niggas wanna hear a nigga chat like it’s Maury

Fuck that, you niggas better bask in my glory

They call me to slide through the store ‘cah I’m so patterned

To be fair, we don’t go Hatton

We don’t tell lies, I think the kids call it “no cappin'”

The boys rough, but the flow’s satin

I J Hus’tle and I’m MoStack’ing, they wanna’ catch me on the roads lacking

You better pray that it don’t happen (Niggas)

And I don’t sell drugs, still, I’m dope rappin’

Have your whole pattern Stiff Chocolate with the book

To be fair, I don’t feel Twitter

Getting told I’m not a real spitter. by some broke-arse bill splitter

Listen, nigga, you got bigger fish to fry, like

If I ever see your girlfriend in Dubai, oh, Lord

Party on the boat she’s onboard

And the Birkin is a bag you can’t afford and she’d like one

Do the maths, you ain’t the right one

It’s alright, son, we send her back before the night’s done

I wrote one, light one, eight-out-of-ten

She’s my aight one, think of a hit, then I write one

On when I sight one

This my, this my Ghanaian flow, it’s a tight one

If she pretty then I put her on a flight

I put her on a jet if her pussy—, wait

Look, my nephews are listening, my chef should be Michelin

There’s guests in my kitchen and my left wrist is glistening

My tunes getting played from a set to a christening

They’re pissed on the net ’cause I said I ain’t listening

Real niggas know it’s all positioning

Real niggas know I’m not the victim, alright, I am

I’ll take the L, they hype the Gram

They tell their jokes to spite the man

I feed my folks, they bite my hand

I do the most, I’ll fly to Cannes

To watch a film, then bye, alright

Headline Reading and Leeds like it’s easy

Funny when they talk about the game ‘cah it needs me

Niggas wanna hear a nigga spill it all to Zeze

Fuck that, you niggas didn’t know that I’m greazy

It’s easy, man talk shit until they see me

Believe me, all you niggas give me (Heebie jeebies)

Word to Lauryn, I will die on this hill

You little niggas two figures shy on my deals

Someone slide me the bill (Okay, I got it)

What my eyes don’t see, the Messiah reveals

If it all goes left, give Jasiah my will

‘Cah I guess I’m just the bredda that they’re dying to kill, ah (Woo)

Your boy’s mad dark, still, I shine like a grill

Yeah, I’m healthy and I’m blessed, but I rhyme like I’m ill

Linebacker, holding on the line like Khalil, ooh

I live a life that they try to fulfil

So they hate on my name but admire my skill

And before I touch stage, gotta wire my mil, ah

My niggas do drill that was prior to drill

If you see me with my dragons lookin’ fly in the field

Know Khaleesi couldn’t fathom all the fire I spill, nah

You old washed niggas should retire, for real

There’s a time you should move and a time to be still

There’s a time to destroy and a time to rebuild

But all I see is washed up godfathers and washed up podcasters

I own all my masters, I ain’t got masters

I throw a party on the yacht and wear my Yacht Master

They think I just chart-top, but I’m the top charter

Gaffer like I’m Scott Parker

For when the mandem used to rock parkas

I am nasty, but I’m not Marcus

Genius, I could’ve clocked Harvard

My niggas slide, but they are not dancers

Dead rappers wanna swap chargers

Nah, I mean they wanna swap stances

Nah, I mean they wanna trade places

Get to scrappin’ like I ain’t famous

Have you dashing like you’re Dwain Chambers

Follow fashion, man, you fake greatness

To make a classic, yeah, it takes ages

But I still do it like my mate David

Nah, I mean like my bro Dave

Me and MIST, that’s a close shave

They fear this, but they won’t say

I’m the nearest on a cold day

They love to talk about the old days

Them man are old, like, “Annie, are you okay?”

I prefer not to speak like I’m José

(I prefer really not to, not to speak)

(If I speak I am in, in big trouble)

(Woo)

This is what I meant when I said what I said

I got whips in my drive, pretty women in my bed

My accolades are bigger than my head

Stylo told me, “Kill ’em till they’re dead”

(The killy’dem ah carry one inna di head)

(Don Dada, kick arff face with bank robber)

If it’s a ting then I’ll just pattern it like Trev, ah

Man I got ‘Teks like I’m Kylian, punch like I’m Dillian

Walk in a gym and I bump into William

The S on chest, yeah, that stands for “success”

But the M on my hairline stands for my millions

Ah, I got a brilliant car, I got a brilliant team

They wanna bring up my past because I’m living my dream

What we achieved ain’t a shock ‘cah we knew it

We just stepped all clean and said, “Mel made me do it,” ow

Now there’s not enough space in my wardrobe

Benjart fitted on my waist and my torso

Niggas keep on thinking I’m a chief, oh, you thought so?

Chatty patty niggas, man, you niggas need a talkshow

I’ve never seen real dons turn loose women

Sleep real good, fresh sheets, new linen

If we ever played a game called “Guess Who’s Winning”

Then you’ll open up the door, I’ll be in the room chillin’

There’ll never be a time where me and yous are twinning

Why? Different status, my chicks the baddest

You know the bags Chanel, the trips to Paris

And if your boy’s a king, the bit’s a palace

Okay, three O2s that I sell out

Man, I’m such a sellout

Might fuck around and bring Adele out

Me and Flipz don’t talk like we fell out

Ah, get the hell out, all the shit I gotta spell out

Please A, double-L, O-W me

Every time I double-plaque they go and double my P

I was double-spread Mike, now I cover i-D

Wouldn’t cover for you dickheads if you covered my—

Ah, I knew they wouldn’t like it if I blow

Got all your niggas rattled, but you hide it on the low

I’m from the city where they’re ridin’ with the pole

And now my nephews can’t believe that Spider-Man’s my bro

Shout Tom, that’s my guy, on-top till we die

Yeah, I skip through the world, hop-scotch to Dubai

There’s a lot to divide, but my God will provide

Couldn’t get to where I’m going if you hopped in my—

I got TJ tellin’ me we’re done

Said, “I thought I have an hour left?”

Ah, man, my enemies are out of breath

I pray, then I fast, then I counter-press

Spent a week in the sticks, but tonight, I’m at my South address

Ah, you know how it gets

Holy Spirit, that’s just how I’m blessed

Aight, twenty bags for my shower head, a nigga gotta shower fresh

You little boys are out your depth

Know I got Ashville on the yard and Yianni on the wrap

I mean, I’m Yianni on the rap

I’m the best at what I do, they think I’m braggin’ on the track

But I’m flexing ‘cah it’s true and if you went and run it back

You’d know I’d left you with the truth

‘Cause cars don’t make you this lit

The money don’t make you this good

The plaques don’t make you this cold

Give a fuck what my shit sold

I buss a rhyme when I’m in flip mode, you pricks know

The boy’s just way too nice so you always see my music on the shelf

I’ve been the G.O.A.T. for so long that they never hype a nigga up

So I guess I gotta do it to myself, boy

Song Of The Season The Track That Ruled Summer 2022

Song Of The Season The Track That Ruled Summer 2022
Song Of The Season The Track That Ruled Summer 2022

Find out what artist took home the crown, according to Genius pageviews.

This year was kind of an unusual summer for music. Boosted by the success of a Netflix series, an ‘80s throwback returned to rule the charts; Beyoncé, Drake, and even Megan Thee Stallion dipped into house music; and The Game waged war on Eminem with what has to be one of the longest (and maybe most unnecessary) diss tracks of all time. But which of those artists spent the most time on our minds during Instagram-worthy European vacations, backyard cookouts, and days at the beach? We here at Genius have your answer.

With summer 2022 officially coming to a close yesterday, we decided to comb through Genius data to determine the Song of the Season using songpage views racked up on the site between the first official day of summer (June 21) and the first official day of fall (September 22). Read on to find out what song took home the crown this year and all the songs that were runners up.

Song of the Season: Summer 2022

Racking up over 1.9M Genius pageviews in just three months, the song that earns the official Song of the Season: Summer 2022 title by a long shot is Kate Bush’s 1985 hit “Running Up That Hill (Made A Deal With God).”

A year ago, it might have been inconceivable that a 37-year-old song could claim the honor, but the impetus for the track’s renewed success explains a lot. The song resurfaced after appearing in the record-breaking fourth season of Netflix’s Stranger Things, which one could just as easily argue was this year’s show of the summer. The recurring soundtrack placement quickly led to legions of Gen Z teens discovering the throwback for the first time, flooding TikTok with videos using the audio, and apparently scouring the Genius site for interpretations of the track’s lyrics.

In late July, “Running Up That Hill” topped the U.K. charts and reached No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100, 27 spots higher than its original 1985 U.S. peak. In addition to that, its renewed success earned Bush three Guinness World Records: Oldest Female Artist To Reach Number One, Longest Time For A Track To Reach Number One On The U.K.’s Official Singles Chart, and Longest Gap Between Number Ones. Now, she gets to add a Genius honor to that list.

Runners-up

While no one came close to Bush’s nearly 2 million pageviews, plenty of other songs made a solid impression on music fans over the past three months. Below are a list of the next 10 runners-up in the race for Song of the Season to fuel your summer nostalgia as fall descends upon us.

“God Did” by DJ Khaled (598K pageviews)

“Doja” by Central Cee (542K pageviews)

“Break My Soul” by Beyoncé (429K pageviews)

“The 30th” by Billie Eilish (415K pageviews)

The follow-up to 2020’s Calm was written during a trip to Joshua Tree, California, where the band members had a chance to recharge their batteries and create songs that came naturally, without much fuss. Hence the simplistic title.

“I think that just calling it 5SOS5 kind of represents this idea of everything just coming to us as it’s meant to, you know what I mean?” guitarist Michael Clifford told Spin. “Instead of having to go to war with ourselves musically and fighting these battles, it was just happening, and we were just allowing it to come.”

5 Seconds of Summer released five singles ahead of the album: “Complete Mess,” “Take My Hand,” “Me Myself & I,” “Blender,” and “Older.” The last of those features vocals from Sierra Deaton, fiancée of lead singer Luke Hemmings.

STAR WALKIN’ (League of Legends Worlds Anthem) Lyrics

[Chorus]

Don’t ever say it’s over if I’m breathin’

Racin’ to the moonlight and I’m speedin’

I’m headed to the stars, ready to go far

I’m star walkin’

Don’t ever say it’s over if I’m breathin’

Racin’ to the moonlight and I’m speedin’

I’m headed to the stars, ready to go far

I’m star walkin’ (I’m star walkin’)

[Verse 1]

On a mission to get high up, I know that I’ma die

Reachin’ for a life that I don’t really need at all

Never listened to replies, learned a lesson from the wise

You should never take advice from a nigga that ain’t try

[Pre-Chorus]

They said I wouldn’t make it out alive

They told me I would never see the rise

That’s why I gotta kill ’em every time

Gotta watch ’em bleed, too

Been that nigga since I came out my mama (Woo)

Thankin’ God Daddy never wore a condom (Woo)

Why worship legends when you know that you can join ’em?

Th-These niggas don’t like me, they don’t like me

Likely, they wanna fight me

Come on, try it out, try me

They put me down, but I never cried out, “Why me?”

The Bob Dylan Song Genesis’ Phil Collins Would Pass On To His Kids

It’s no doubt that many musicians in the music scene influence each other. Some started pursuing a music career after listening to other names, and others got inspired by their favorite musicians while making a musical effort.

In some cases, another musician can have great importance in an artist’s life. One of the greatest names in the rock music scene, Phil Collins, is also among those, and he appreciated one of Bob Dylan‘s songs so much that he would pass it on to his kids.

Which Bob Dylan Song Did Phil Collins Want His Kids To Hear?Bob Dylan is not only one of the greatest songwriters of all time, but he has also been a prominent cultural figure throughout his music career. He released most of his internationally celebrated music work in the 1960s, and they became anthems for the civil rights and anti-war movements of that time.

Among these songs that have great importance in the 1960s, Bob Dylan’s ‘The Times They Are A-Changin” has a special place. It reflected a more politically charged Dylan, and he wrote this song to create an anthem of change. Since its release, ‘The Times They Are A-Changin” has been covered by numerous artists, including Phil Collins.

In a 2017 interview with BBC Radio 4’s Inheritance Tracks, Phil Collins revealed the songs that inspired him while he was young. He named Bob Dylan’s ‘The Times They Are A-Changin’ one of them. He stated that he would want this song to pass on to his kids because the lyrics are sincere and honest.

Moreover, Collins said that the change that took place back in those days was reflected in music, culture, America, and politics. He then added that one could even do an essay or thesis on this song, and it’s something everybody should listen to every six months or every general election.

In the interview with BBC Radio 4’s Inheritance Tracks, Phil Collins said the following:

“The track I would pass on is ‘The Times They Are A-Changin” by Bob Dylan. I was a bit late coming to Dylan, but The Beatles liked him. I bought this single, played an awful lot, and the lyrics are honest and real. ‘Come senators, congressmen, please heed the call / Don’t stand in the doorway, don’t block up the hall,’ because there is a change coming, and this spells it out.

Poetically, the situation of the time of the change that is was going on in music, culture, America, and politics. I pass this song to anybody that forgotten. I think you could almost do an essay or a thesis at school. I’m saying listen to this and then write down what you think. I would definitely pass it on to my kids, but it’s a song that I think everybody should hear every six months or certainly every general election.”

MÖTLEY CRÜE Are Planning Another U.S. Tour In 2024 Says VINCE NEIL

With MÖTLEY CRÜE having just wrapped up the final show of the U.S. leg of “The Stadium Tour,” fans might be wondering if the band is done touring for good. But singer Vince Neil has assured fans that MÖTLEY CRÜE will continue to tour internationally, with plans to return to the U.S. in 2024.

“We’re far from being over,” Neil told John Katsilometes of the Las Vegas Review-Journal. “When we come back in ’24, we’re going to do it all over again.”

Neil also confirmed that there are talks of CRÜE returning for a third residency in Vegas, where they previously played a series of shows at the Joint at the Hard Rock Hotel in 2012 and again in 2013.

“We have definitely talked about doing it, and everybody loves to do the residencies, so I say, ‘Yeah, we’re gonna do it,’” Neil said. “We just have to look at sometime in ’24, to be back in Vegas. But we will be back.”He also said that band will only stick to touring and that there are no plans for new studio album.

“We are strictly a touring band,” Neil said. “When you see this show at Allegiant, you’ll see why. You’re going to see something that’s unbelievable, lights and lasers, three dancers. There are a lot of cool special effects, and a cool band putting on a rock show.”

Earlier this year, DEF LEPPARD guitarist Phil Collen was asked if fans can expect “The Stadium Tour” in other parts of world, to which he responded: “Definitely. Obviously, this year we’re touring the States with MÖTLEY CRÜE, POISON and Joan Jett. And that starts in a couple of [weeks]… But the tour is gonna be three years — at least three years — for the album [Diamond Star Halos]. [We’re doing] America this [year]. Definitely next summer is gonna be Europe. And then South America, Australia [and] Japan — next year, hopefully at some point, we’ll be playing all of those markets.”

On whether if the same package of bands that touring U.S. will be touring through other countries, Phil said: “That’s what they’re talking about. Obviously, I can say, ‘Yeah, let’s do that,’ but we’ve gotta ask them as well. But I think MÖTLEY CRÜE have signed up. So hopefully that’s all gonna come, and Joan Jett and POISON. That would be amazing.”

Taylor Swift Has Us All Thinking About the Scarf from ‘All Too Well’ Again

We might be OK, but we’re actually not fine at all after Taylor Swift suggested that the scarf from her fan-favorite epic ballad “All Too Well” might not actually be lingering in the drawer of a former flame. In fact, the scarf with the power to remind ex-lovers of innocence and that reportedly smells like the chart-topping singer-songwriter is, according to Swift, nothing but a carefully constructed metaphor.

The revelation came during Swift’s appearance Friday evening at the Toronto International Film Festival, where the Grammy Award-winning artist was promoting her self-directed eponymous film inspired by the song. The ambitious short, which stars Stranger Things’ Sadie Sink and The Maze Runner’s Dylan O’Brien, follows the journey of a 21 year-old woman whose heart is shattered by an older boyfriend.

“Basically, the scarf is a metaphor, and we turned it red because red it a very important color in this album, which is called Red,” Swift said, drawing laughter from the audience. “And, I think when I say it’s a metaphor, I’m just going to stop.”

For years, Swifties have been unable to get rid of the many fan theories surrounding The Scarf — a Swiftian Easter egg that only escalated in popularity after the release of Red (Taylor’s Version) late last year. The album’s inclusion of the long-rumored 10-minute version of “All Too Well,” which painted a scathing portrait of the love affair that transformed Swift into a crumpled-up piece of paper launched thousands of memes — many of them aimed at actress Maggie Gyllenhaal, whom fans believed to be the sister at whose house Swift left infamous accessory. (At least Swifties have a new puzzle to keep them occupied while the singer preps for the release of her forthcoming album, Midnights, which drops Oct. 21.)

As much as the resurrection of Scarf Gate will keep Swiftie Twitter and TikTok fed for days, Swift’s hour-long interview with TIFF CEO Cameron Bailey was primarily focused on her newfound affinity for filmmaking, peppered with references to movies and directors that inspired Swift during the pandemic as she began to flex her directorial skills. (Swift name dropped an impressive list of reference points throughout the panel — including Guillermo del Toro’s The Devil’s Backbone and The Shape of Water, Alfred Hitchcock’s Rear Window, Sydney Pollack’s The Way We Were, Arthur Hiller’s Love Story, Robert Benton’s Kramer vs. Kramer, Noah Baumbach’s Marriage Story, and the films of John Cassavetes — lest any haughty film school students feel the need to flex their cinema knowledge against the singer. Swift, as any devotee of her work knows, thoroughly believes in doing her homework.)

“It wasn’t it wasn’t like I woke up one day and I was like, ‘You know what I want to do direct,’” she said. “I didn’t go to film school.” However, Swift cited her experience working on countless music videos, claiming that her long hours on set gave her an intimate look into the amount of detail and prompted her to begin questioning why certain creative choices — such as the use of particular lighting or staging — resonated with her artistic sensibilities.

“All the decisions that you make, it’s such a beautifully collaborative process,” she said of filmmaking. “You make decisions, you know, based on your idea as to how you want it to feel, how you want it to look. And then you bring on people you trust.” Swift specifically highlighted the work of All Too Well‘s cinematographer, Rina Yang, as an instrumental force helping the singer realize her dream of shooting the film on 35mm film stock. “I brought her on early on and showed her my endless mood boards and my references, and and what I was looking for in terms of lighting and color and texture. It was it was pretty apparent that we both wanted to shoot on 35 millimeter. I did not know how to do that.” Swift added: “She really, really, really taught me a lot, and I never would have known any anything at all without her.”

When asked about her recent efforts to re-record her back catalog after the master recordings for her first six albums were sold to an investment group, a time the singer called a “period of extreme despair,” Swift commented that she was eventually able to view the loss as a moment of opportunity to not only revisit her creative output, but to also reshape the aesthetic and emotional narratives of each record. The genesis of “All Too Well” from song to screen, Swift noted, was part of that journey.

“It was a song that I loved so much — but it was never chosen by, you know, an A&R team in a conference room as being a single. Nobody saw the potential in it except for the fans,” the singer said of the time when the track was first released on Red in 2012. “So, there would there would be no world in which I could have made a visual elements to that song at that point in time. I needed to 10 years of retrospect in order to know what I would even make to to tell a version of that story visually — and I’m so grateful that I was able to do that, with some crazy stroke of all these different twists of fate.”

Last month, it was announced that All Too Well is eligible for submission in the Best Live Action Short category at next years’ Academy Awards, prompting questions about whether Swift will continue to pursue filmmaking alongside her music career. “I absolutely, absolutely adore telling stories this way,” she said, noting she was open to the idea of working on a longer feature were the right opportunity to come along. However, Swift also noted that her ability to retain full creative control over a film project, especially one that involved utilizing a medium that has fallen by the wayside as digital technology has become more accessible, is a rarity for women in film. “I’m aware of the fact that I’m in an incredibly privileged place to have gotten to finance this short film independently — because when we talk about female filmmakers, I am one of them, but I also realize that there are people who are working so hard to get financing and to get any type of budget together to make the production and the projects that they want to make. So I honestly like, bow down and tip my hat to those female filmmakers.”

Sex Pistols’ Johnny Rotten Pays Tribute to Queen Elizabeth II With Respectful Tweet

For those wondering, Sex Pistols frontman Johnny Rotten has issued a public comment on the death of Queen Elizabeth II, and it’s actually quite respectful. Rotten, of course, will always be linked to the Queen thanks to the band’s ’70s classic “God Save the Queen.”

The track became popular during the Queen’s Silver Jubilee celebration, viewed by many as a protest against the monarchy’s treatment of the working class. The band performed the track on a boat trip that coincided with the Queen’s Silver Jubilee celebration. Hopping aboard a boat named the Queen Elizabeth, they traveled down the River Thames and several members of their party and entourage were arrested after they docked.

Rotten, who these days goes by his given name of John Lydon, kept his comments succinct, offering, “Rest in Peace Queen Elizabeth II. Send her victorious.”

Two of his Sex Pistols bandmates weren’t quite as diplomatic after learning of the Queen’s death, with bassist Glen Matlock commenting, “God save the king – hope he’s not a silly old thing…” Meanwhile, guitarist Steve Jones posted some Sex Pistols’ “God Save the Queen” artwork featuring an image of the queen with a safety pin through her lip and the wording, “God Save the Queen / She Ain’t No Human Being” on the image. Jones simply commented, “How do you feel?” along with the image.

Earlier this year, as the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebration was about to begin, John Lydon offered further insight on his views toward Queen Elizabeth II during a chat on U.K.’s Talk TV program Piers Morgan Uncensored.

When Morgan started up a discussion on Lydon’s views of the Royal Family, bringing up the Sex Pistols’ “God Save the Queen,” the singer stated, “It’s anti-royalist, but it’s not anti-human.”

“I’ve got to tell the world this. Everyone presumes that I’m against the royal family as human beings, I’m not. I’m actually really, really proud of the queen for surviving and doing so well,” said Lydon, while also raising his hand to his brow with a salute. “I applaud her for that and that’s a fantastic achievement. I’m not a curmudgeon about that.”

That said, he defended his stance within the song, stating, “I just think that if I’m paying my tax money to support this system I should have a say so in how it’s spent.”

Discussing the Royal Family’s future amidst the Queen’s health issues earlier this year, Lydon also added, “I think it’s possibly the end of the monarchy because Prince Charles is not going to be able to handle it. This is the man who plays Pink Floyd to his cabbages.”

2022 NFL season Week 1 What We Learned from Bills’ season-opening win over Rams on Thursday

Allen, Bills make statement. Technically, Josh Allen didn’t have a perfect night. He took a sack and threw two interceptions, after all. But anyone watching Thursday’s game knows that the first one was clearly on the receiver; chalk the second pick up to a great play by Rams cornerback Troy Hill, who read the throw beautifully. Before and after that, however, Allen was a machine. Once he was able to use his legs more in the second half — both on scrambles and designed runs — the Rams had no answer for him. Through three quarters, there were zero passes of 20-plus air yards. Then on the first play of the fourth quarter, Allen faced a Cover-0 blitz and dialed up a deep ball to Gabe Davis for 47 yards. Three plays later, he launched into the end zone. How do you stop him? Two picks couldn’t do it. Allen, everyone’s MVP favorite, is off to a blazing start.

Is there reason for Stafford concern? It’s easy pickings to wonder if Matthew Stafford is fully healthy. After all the offseason stories about his elbow, how could we not? There were times in the game where he threw more over the top than I can remember, but that’s hardly proof he’s somehow favoring it with his throwing motion. Stafford’s first interception looked like a miscommunication with tight end Tyler Higbee — hard to know who’s to blame. On the second INT, Stafford tried to dial up his Super Bowl magic with the no-look (three-quarters arm angle) pass to Cooper Kupp, but Stafford was high and off-target with it. Was it a pretty outing? Not in the least. But the Rams’ blocking issues and inability to run the ball out of 11 personnel made his job a lot harder. There might be a physical element to Stafford’s Week 1 struggles, but let’s not just default to that assumption after one game.Hats off to the Bills’ defense. Much of the talk coming in was how the Bills’ young corners might struggle. But rookies Kaiir Elam and Christian Benford (a sixth-rounder who played FCS ball a year ago) held up extremely well, and Dane Jackson had a pick. The Rams, hard as they tried, just couldn’t get the Bills out of those two-high looks most of the night. When you can’t run the ball, that’s tough. It seemed to frustrate Stafford and Sean McVay from a big-play standpoint — the opportunities were few and far between. Bills defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier technically operates with an old-school mentality: make the offense matriculate down the field eight, 10, 12 plays at a crack. The thinking is that mistakes will happen. That philosophy panned out in a big way Thursday. The Bills got good pressure most of the night (especially early) from Von Miller and what looks like a much deeper defensive line group. The Rams helped them by pass-protecting poorly, and they had only one drive longer than 38 yards in the game’s first 55 minutes. But credit is deserved for a Buffalo defense that hauled in three picks and seven sacks. It was a tremendous effort.

Dorsey has impressive debut. Bills offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey was in his bag early on in his first regular-season game as a play-caller. Those concerns about losing Brian Daboll are yesterday’s news (for now). Dorsey had Allen running some rollout plays that Cam Newton used to with the Panthers back when Dorsey was his QB coach. On the TD drive that put the Bills up 17-10, Dorsey used Allen as a runner a few times, resulting in his highlight-reel stiff-arm of Rams safety Nick Scott. Mix that in with the outside zone toss plays — a Kyle Shanahan staple — that appear to be a new wrinkle and Dorsey was able to keep the Rams’ defense off-kilter several times. So, he’s drawing from other team’s concepts while also keeping the core of the playbook that Allen excelled with the past few years. It’s hard to argue with that formula.

Where was Cam? The Rams used running back Darrell Henderson extensively early in the game — and on all eight plays of the opening drive — while Cam Akers mostly sat. This was after Akers declared earlier this week that, “I know I’m healthy.” He added: “Everybody else will just get to see (Thursday). I’m not trying to go show anybody that I’m healthy. I’m just going to play my game.” Akers’ first carry came a few minutes into the second quarter, resulting in a no-gain. He’d finish with two carries for zero yards. Is it too early to be concerned? Of course. It’s Week 1. The Rams have 10 days until they face the Falcons. Some of his usage can be attributed to the score getting a bit out of hand. Perhaps the soft-tissue injury Akers dealt with in the preseason is still barking a bit, too. But how the Rams use their backs early this season will be worth monitoring. Akers’ fantasy owners certainly will be.

U.K. braced for death of Queen Elizabeth II. It still came as a shock.

LONDON — On the morning of her father’s death, on the day she would become queen, 25-year-old Elizabeth was perched in a treehouse in Kenya watching a herd of elephants at a watering hole. Because of the distance and difficulty of communication, it took hours for her to get the news.

On Thursday, in just one marker of how much the world changed during her 70-year reign, the news of her own sudden illness and death spread in milliseconds, via the royal family’s Twitter account. Flight tracking data revealed the paths of her children rushing to her bedside at Balmoral Castle. By the time the royal household staff posted the black-bordered death notice on the gates of Buckingham Palace, everybody knew. The BBC news anchors were already dressed in black.

It was still a shock, in its stunning, mortal rapidity.

As the only monarch the vast majority of Britons have ever known, she has been a constant in people’s lives — her profile on the currency, on the stamps. She was there in times of celebration and sorrow and fear. As she aged, she became more and more a grandmotherly figure of warm and fuzzy affection, even for those who don’t especially like the institution.

Her son Charles, Britain’s longest-serving monarch-in-waiting, is now finally King Charles III. His wife, Camilla, will be known as “queen consort.”

Queen Elizabeth II and her son Charles attend the State Opening of Parliament in 2017.
Queen Elizabeth II and her son Charles attend the State Opening of Parliament in 2017.

The ruddy-cheeked 73-year-old Charles, who has spent his life advocating organic farming and railing against modern architecture while wearing immaculately tailored pinstripes, will now become the 21st century’s most high-profile environmental activist, raising his voice against climate change and species devastation, if past is prologue to his reign.

This is a moment that Britain has been bracing for, with an elaborate plan for “Operation London Bridge” mapping out what happens over the next 10 days, included the solemnity and pageantry, the real emotion and choreographed kitsch, of a royal funeral and the ascension of a new monarch.

These coming days will see Elizabeth’s coffin lie in rest in Scotland and then make its way to London, where it will be processed from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Hall. It will lie on a raised box known as a catafalque, and members of the public, as well as VIPs, will be allowed to visit and pay their respects, ahead of a state funeral Sept. 18.

Meanwhile, the Accession Council will meet. A proclamation announcing Charles as the new king will be read from a balcony at St. James’s Palace. Charles will travel to Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland to console his subjects. And for the first time since 1952, the national anthem will be played with the words “God Save the King.” Hopefully, the people will like him. But that is far from certain.

Elizabeth was the head of state not only of the United Kingdom but also of 14 other countries, including Australia, Canada and Jamaica, as well as a religious figure, as “Defender of the Faith and Supreme Governor of the Church of England.” Charles is more spiritual than devout.

Her majesty led a remarkably robust life, mostly free of illness, attending official engagements, serving as a patron of charities and projecting British power in trips around the world. She spent considerable time outdoors. She was a lifelong lover — and rider and breeder — of horses. She surrounded herself with dogs, including her famous corgis. She enjoyed shooting birds and stags.

By age 96, after the death of her husband, Prince Philip, and health and mobility issues that followed a brief hospitalization last fall, the queen was delegating more while receding from public life. But she was still around, still there — if sometimes via Zoom.

Just on Tuesday, two afternoons earlier, she accepted in person the resignation of Boris Johnson and ceremonially appointed Liz Truss — her 15th, now last, prime minister.

In one of her earliest public speeches, to mark her 21st birthday in 1947, then Princess Elizabeth declared “my whole life, whether it be long or short, shall be devoted to your service.”

Crowds hail Queen Elizabeth II and her husband, Prince Philip, during the her Silver Jubilee procession on June 7, 1977.
Crowds hail Queen Elizabeth II and her husband, Prince Philip, during the her Silver Jubilee procession on June 7, 1977.

At the queen’s Silver Jubilee in 1977, marking 25 years on the throne, she reaffirmed that pledge. “Although that vow was made in my salad days, when I was green in judgment, I do not regret nor retract one word of it,” she said.

In her later years, the queen told a close confidant, she would never, ever abdicate the throne, unless she suffered from severe dementia or a massive stroke. She was true to her word.

When Buckingham Palace announced to the media via email at 12:32 p.m. London time on Thursday that the queen required “medical supervision” and her doctors were “concerned,” the busy aides and huffy politicians in the Palace of Westminster briefly hushed, staring at their smartphones.

In minutes, Truss was tweeting, “The whole country will be deeply concerned by the news from Buckingham Palace this lunchtime.”

Quickly to Balmoral Castle — via airplane and then speeding Range Rovers — came her children, the princes and princess Charles, Andrew, Edward and Anne.

So, too, her grandchildren, Prince William, 40, now heir to the throne, followed later by Prince Harry.

By nightfall, as rain poured down in Scotland, came the second announcement from the palace, as brief as a telegraph from long ago: “The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon. The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow.”

The new king issued a statement, saying, “We mourn profoundly the passing of a cherished Sovereign and a much-loved Mother.”

He said Britain would be entering a period of “mourning and change.”

Charles acknowledged the grief, this “moment of the greatest sadness” for him and his family, and said her loss would be “deeply felt” in Britain, the Commonwealth “and by countless people around the world.”

Messages of condolence — and celebration of her life — came in waves.

Johnson said something right when he observed, “there is an ache at the passing of our Queen, a deep and personal sense of loss — far more intense, perhaps, than we expected.”

President Biden ordered flags flown at half-staff.

Pope Francis praised her “devotion to duty, her steadfast witness of faith in Jesus Christ and her firm hope in his promises.”

The British Horseracing Authority hailed the queen as a great and influential supporter.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said that “under history’s brightest spotlight,” the queen “offered a masterclass in grace and strength, power and poise.” She said Elizabeth’s life and leadership “will continue to inspire young women and girls in public service, now and for generations to come.”

Former president Donald Trump said, “What a grand and beautiful lady she was — there was nobody like her!”

The British Kennel Club hailed her as “one of the most dog loving monarchs in history.”

Former president Barack Obama said she “captivated the world.”

The royal biographers joined in. Hugo Vickers said the queen “bestowed an atmosphere of calm over a very fast-changing world” and was an “extraordinary conciliator.” He recalled the moment when, in 2012, she shook hands with Martin McGuinness, a former IRA commander who had become deputy first minister of Northern Ireland. The queen’s cousin, Louis Mountbatten, had been killed by the IRA in 1979.

In the last living public image of the queen, from the transition of prime ministers on Tuesday, she is shown standing before a roaring fire at Balmoral in a no-nonsense gray cardigan and practical plaid skirt, gripping her deceased husband’s cane in one hand and beaming a smile toward the camera.

She looked old, bent, frail, yes, but still standing, still ready do her job.

Once the queen said, “I have to be seen to be believed.”

As it began, it ended.

HELL NO STAY WOKE !!!!! Oh and here’s my ass,” along with a wink face emoji. In the clip, the “Toxic” singer showed off her bikini while she sunbathed and went for a swim in the ocean. Britney was seen enjoying the summer sun with a gentleman pal on a luxurious yacht. Her friend also put on Britney’s bikini top while the mom-of-two went completely topless on the fancy boat that day.

The posts comes amid on-going drama with her son Jayden, 15, pertaining to a recent interview he did with his dad Kevin Federline for ITV in the UK. In the interview, the teen expressed that he was not a fan of her revealing Instagram posts. “It’s like almost as if she has to put something on Instagram to get attention,” Jayden said. “This has gone on for years and years and years, and there’s a high chance that this is never going to really stop, but I’m hoping for me, maybe she will,” he added.

Britney has since responded, and apologized for the way her posts make him “feel” — but made it clear she will continue to post as she pleases. “I haven’t been able to post my loving family… either way I’m so sorry children I continue to do social media,” she said in a post on Sept. 2. “I’m sorry you feel I do it for attention … I’m sorry for the way you feel … but guess what ???? I’ve got news for you … I’m a child of God as well we all are in God’s eyes … so NOPE I’m not sorry … I’ve learned to say SO !!!” she defiantly added.

The “Toxic” singer was seemingly enjoying some much-deserved R&R, and her 42.2 million followers were loving the latest post. One fan took to the comments section and wrote, “Enjoy your life queen,” along with a series of red hearts. A separate fan commented laughing emojis along with, “that’s right. Tell ‘em to kiss it.” Earlier that day, Britney also shared a beautiful photo of a pink flower with the caption, “🇨🇮🇨🇮🇨🇮.” The photo was taken by a user that the singer tagged named @haleystravels.

The revealing Instagram video comes nearly two weeks after Britney and Elton John, 75, released their hit song “Hold Me Closer.” The 40-year-old shared a fan-made edit on Sept. 2 to thank her fans for listening to her new single. She captioned the post, “Thank you to my fans for making my song number one for a week now.” The single was released on Aug. 26, and has already achieved wild success — marking her first Billboard top 10 in nearly a decade.

Just two days before the song was released, Britney took to Twitter to share some thoughts about the new collaboration. She wrote, “Okie dokie … my first song in 6 years !!!! It’s pretty damn cool that I’m singing with one of the most classic men of our time … @eltonofficial !!!! I’m kinda overwhelmed… it’s a big deal to me !!! I’m meditating more and learning my space is valuable and precious !!!” And Elton also shared a special message when the song was released on his Instagram. He captioned the adoring post, “I’m thrilled with the response to Hold Me Closer! I wanted to do a fun, happy summer track so was ecstatic when Britney agreed to be a part of this song! She truly is an icon, one of the all-time great pop stars and I love her dearly. I hope you all love it!”

Serena Williams’ legendary tennis career likely over after third-round singles’ play loss at US Open

Serena Williams’ legendary tennis career has likely come to an end after she fell to Australia’s Ajla Tomljanović in the third round of the US Open at Arthur Ashe Stadium in Flushing, New York.

The 23-time grand slam singles champion leaves an indelible mark, not only on tennis, but all of sport.

Tomljanović, who won the more-than-three-hour match 7-5 6-7(4) 6-1, advances to the round of 16 at the US Open for the first time.

In an on-court interview with ESPN after the match, Williams was asked whether she would reconsider her evolution away from tennis, as she has put it.

“I don’t think so, but you never know,” she said.

In a happy, tears-filled interview she thanked her parents, saying she was very grateful to them because they started everything.

And she credited her older sister, Venus Williams, for her success.

“I wouldn’t be Serena if there wasn’t Venus,” she said. “She’s the only reason Serena Williams ever existed.”

Serena Williams shakes hands with Ajla Tomljanovic after a women’s singles match at the 2022 US Open, Friday, Sep. 2, 2022 in Flushing, NY.

Tomljanović said she was feeling sorry because “I love Serena just as much as you guys do.”

“What she’s done for me, for the sport of tennis, is incredible,” she said in her interview on court. “I never thought that I’d have a chance to play her in her last match when I remember watching her as a kid in all those finals, so this is a surreal moment for me.”

Tomljanović was asked how she handled the occasion of being in this electric environment at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

“I just thought she would beat me, you know,” Tomljanović said. “The pressure wasn’t on me. She’s Serena. I didn’t think that I — even to the last point I knew that she’s in a really good position to win even when she’s down 5-1. I don’t know how many match points I needed to finish it off, but that’s just who she is. She’s the greatest of all time, period.”

After her improbable second-round win over Anett Kontaveit, Serena Williams, 40, summed up her surprise performances at the US Open better than perhaps anybody else could.

“I’m just Serena,” she said matter-of-factly, a quote that will no doubt go down as one of the most memorable in sport.

That ability to find another gear and dig even deeper in the most difficult moments has provided the bedrock for Williams’ sustained success over more than 20 years on the Tour.

She showed the same grit and tenacity Friday as the world No. 46 Tomljanović was on top of her game.

“I’ve been down before,” Williams told reporters after the match. “I’ve been down, like, 5-1 I think before and come back. I don’t really give up.”

Williams, arguably the greatest women’s tennis player ever, fought off five match points before a shot into the net ended it.

“I tried,” Williams said. “Ajla just played a little bit better.”

The crowd of 23,859 inside Arthur Ashe Stadium for the night session tried to will Williams to another victory but on this night, the winner of 847 career matches and 73 titles was second best.

Given her form coming into the US Open — just one win since returning to the circuit in June after a year out with injury — it was fair to assume that Williams’ opening round match against Danka Kovinic would be little more than an emotional farewell from tennis for the 23-time grand slam champion.

But being “just Serena,” Williams produced by far her best tennis of the season to consummately dispatch Kovinic and extended her last dance in New York by a couple of days.

Then came Kontaveit, the world No. 2 and one of the toughest players on Tour. The Estonian would provide a much sterner test than Kovinic and Williams undoubtedly went into their match as the considerable underdog.

Serena Williams has raised her game during the US Open.

Surely, after two glittering decades at the top, this is where Williams’ career would come to end? Of course, it didn’t. She is, after all, “just Serena.”

In her three-set win over Kontaveit, Williams elevated her level of tennis to a place many thought she may no longer be able to reach. The accuracy and power in her widely feared serve seem to have returned, as has her speed around the court.

Tomljanović reached a career-high ranking of 38 this season and has enjoyed some notable success in 2022, including quarterfinal runs at Wimbledon and the recent Cincinnati Open.

On Friday she was steady as she had just 30 unforced errors to Williams’ 51.

She will face Russian Liudmila Samsonova in the round of 16. Samsonova defeated Aleksandra Krunic of Serbia 6-3, 6-3.
